A Taste of Vienna’s 18th-Century Trios

This concert by Café Zimmermann invites you to rediscover Vienna as the beating heart of European music. It was here that Haydn and Mozart not only perfected the symphony and concerto, but also gave chamber music its voice—an art form both intimate and accessible. In the aristocratic salons of the 18th century, this music became the trusted companion of social evenings, fostering encounters, exchanges, and a refined form of entertainment.
The program recalls that spirit with works by Haydn and Mozart, as well as a gem by Franz Anton Hoffmeister, best known as a publisher but also an inventive and prolific composer. His Sonata No. 3, Op. 11 surprises with its vitality and “Mozartian” charm, defying the superficial label attached to him by his contemporaries. Alongside it, Haydn’s Divertimento Hob. IV:9 and Mozart’s radiant chamber pieces conjure the energy, elegance, and conviviality of Vienna’s salons where music has always been the very heart of its identity
