Overview

The flute parts in Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantatas, brimming with wit and virtuosity, attest to the presence in his circle of the exceptional flutist Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin, a native of Provence who arrived at the Saxon court in 1715. Admired by his contemporaries for his mastery of the instrument, Buffardin was the intended recipient of the sonatas for flute and harpsichord that Bach composed throughout his life, in which one can appreciate French-style ornamentation as well as lively and agile passages.
