A dazzling rediscovery of a timeless masterpiece!
Petr Skalka, violoncelle
Suite No. 1 in G major, BWV 1007
Sonata in D minor for cello (based on the Sonatas and Partitas for violin, BWV 1001-1006)
Suite No. 4 in E-flat major, BWV 1010
Petr Skalka, acclaimed by critics for his free and inspired interpretation of Bach's Suites, delivers a moment suspended between depth and spontaneity.
Bach's Suites are both a monument to Baroque music and an endless field of exploration. As “senza basso” works, they entrust the cello with the entire musical discourse. In his recording released by Claves in February 2024, Petr Skalka delivers a bold interpretation, awarded a Diapason 5 and a Classica Coup de Cœur.
Petr Skalka enriches each suite with personal touches: improvised preludes, ornamentation borrowed from Corelli, or unexpected interludes such as a passacaglia by Biber. This controlled freedom is embodied in the deep, nuanced tone of his 1700 Guarneri cello, which supports a lively, contrasting interpretation that remains faithful to the Baroque spirit.
